The Conception of Jesus Christ Part 5
MRM, mentioned in the introduction to this series, is one group that perpetuates the false claim that Mormons believe the Father had sexual intercourse with Mary. Just a few weeks ago I heard their radio show discussing this. An outline of their claim can be found on their website here. I’ll respond to many of the quotes in MRM’s post (though perhaps I’ll treat most quotes from their appendix in an appendix of my own sometime later). Because quotes from lay members, Mormon bloggers, Mormon writers, or even BYU professors are irrelevant when dealing with Church doctrine, I plan to ignore most of them completely. In fact, giving such weighted credence to these minority, fringe, or non-authoritative groups is one of the things that largely keeps MRM’s discussion from being legitimate. Continue reading
The Conception of Jesus Christ Part 4
As I talk about in my post Simple Questions, Complex Answers?, there is a simple answer to every question, but the simple answer is almost always wrong. Before we jump in to the common quotes used by critics of the Church, there are two caveats, or stipulations, that merit discussion. These stipulations will help us to understand what the original speakers really meant and what weight they intended their words to carry. Continue reading

The Conception of Jesus Christ Part 2
As you may have read in the introduction to this series, critics like MRM say that the Church has not taken an unequivocal position on whether or not the Father had sexual intercourse with Mary. This is misleading. While the Church has not taken an unequivocal position on how conception took place, it has taken a very unequivocal position on the issue of sexual intercourse between the Father and Mary. Continue reading

The Conception of Jesus Christ
I love the end of the year. It provides a wonderful opportunity to remember the birth of the Savior, and then, consequently, his life and saving mission. It also gives me the chance to recommit to walking more closely in his footsteps. Invariably, though, this celebration is sullied by nefarious rumors aimed at tarnishing the LDS Church, spread by those who think the Christmas season also affords the opportune time to strike. Continue reading
