The Purpose of Missionaries
“Two by two, we’re marching door to door
Cause God loves Mormons, and he wants some more!”
The purpose of a missionary is not to “make Mormons,” or, in other words, to convert everyone they meet. The purpose of a missionary, as stated in the missionary handbook Preach My Gospel, is this:
“Invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.”
As you can see, we echo the words of Paul, who said,
“For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel” (1 Corinthians 1:17).
Certainly we are overjoyed when people accept our invitations to come unto Christ, but we are not dismayed if we don’t baptize a single person on our mission, because that is not our purpose as missionaries. Our purpose is to preach and invite.
